Undertale turned 5 on September 15th. From humble Kickstarter project by Toby Fox to a world wide phenomenon, this game has touched the hearts of millions. There’s been memes, tons of fan events and cosplays, and even the Pope was given a copy of the game (yes that is true) few games achieve the status Undertale has and few games deserve it as much. This game is absolutely one of my top ten games of the decade. Toby Fox is an inspirational creator.

Two years ago, Toby dropped his next game for free on Halloween. He had teased a demo for something. I, like many other unsuspecting gamers, downloaded what I thought was a small test or demo. What we got was a full fledged game with as much heart as Undertale. This game was a passion project. Toby had the idea for Delta Rune even before Undertale and he worked as hard as he could to get his ideas out there in the world and I admire that. It was so inspiring to me that it got me out of my own art rut.

Today to celebrate the 5th anniversary, there was a livestream of an Undertale symphony as well as new merch drops. The symphony was amazing and included everyone’s favorite tunes played beautifully. Even Megalovania makes an appearance. After the concert was over, we were treated to a teaser track from the upcoming Deltarune Chapter 2 as well as a beautiful rendition of the songs “Snowdin Town” and “Home” on piano by Toby Fox himself.

So what’s next for the creator? He gave a sneak peak into the future with a few updates on Deltarune. It was mostly talk about the declining health of his wrists as well as the struggles of working as such a small team, but we got several juicy screenshots that confirms our favorite characters will be returning. Deltarune will be finished by the end of the year with bug testing and finishing touches putting the game at a release between April and September of 2021.

I can’t wait to see what Toby does next. Share your favorite Undertale memory with us in the comments below!
