The first new Crash game following the original formula since the first three for the PlayStation is just around the corner, releasing on October 2. Toys for Bob, the team behind the Spyro Reignited Trilogy, is taking the helm and they seem competent enough for the job. Tidbits of information have been coming out after the 90’s nostalgic trailer and we have a doozy of an info dump! And this one has hips.
The original Tawna is what we would call “hot” for the 90s. Nowadays hot is more realistically proportioned. It is the booty’s time to shine. Tawna was a product of that to the point her male-gazed appearance was absent from Crash 2 and Warped due to censorship. The 90s had a weird trend of inserting “hot” female anthro characters into things. Oh hi there Lola Bunny, Luckily most of those characters have evolved into their own and luckily for us, Tawna wasn’t absent from the remake. She kept her figure but was decidedly more her own character.
In Crash 4 It’s About Time, Tawna not only makes her first playable appearance, but is also sporting a sick redesign that’s with the current times. This Tawna is from an alternate timeline where Crash has died. She is now a strong and capable pirate who will help our hero’s but won’t work with them. This Tawna is no damsel.
I never knew I wanted a playable Tawna until today and now I never want to go back to the old ways. In her timeline, Tawna is the bandicoot you call upon when weird yellow men need to be stomped or spun into defeat. She has a hookshot that helps her take out enemies and traverse the terrain of her world. She also has all the same moves as our timeline’s lanky hero.
In a PlayStation underground interview, she’s revealed to play more and be designed more like a superhero than the other two playable characters; Crash and Coco. She’s able to do things the other two can’t do and make jumps Crash only could when aided with a super tornado.
Maybe in the future we’ll have more “tawnaverse” (as it’s being called) Tawna. I for one welcome our new Bandicoot overlord.
