After over 9 years and 102 main series issues, 10 micro series issues, 38 friends forever issues, countless omnibuses, a popular transformers and MLP crossover series that spawned a sequel cross over series, and well over 50 other side series issues, thats 200+ comics, the my little pony comics have come to an end. September will see the release of a mega issue to mark the occasion.

It’s a rather sad day as the comics, where the series had decided to continue after season 9 marked the finale for the show, never seemed to lose steam and plenty of ideas seemed to be had. The comics were starting to hint at things we saw in the finale time skip. It also seemed it may have been inevitable as there was no real downtime lately in the comics. Not many one off breaks between multi-issue epics. And the sales for the comics were still rather good especially this being the only official G4 content still coming out, if you don’t count ponylife.

I follow several of the artists on twitter and some of them seemed to not have known the series was coming to an end. Perhaps it was a hasty decision by Hasbro. And considering how much they’ve been making hasty decisions involving magic the gathering, it’s not surprising. It seems Hasbro is taking the triple A approach of they want to make all the money and not just some of the money. Not sure how this will bode in the future, especially if the newest generation of My Little Pony doesn’t take off how their last one did.

Either way, as someone who has been following and buying these comics since day one, it’s a really sad sight. The comics have brought amazing stories that the show never could. Many of the stories have been extremely touching and the art has been beautiful and vibrantly colorful. There’s been simple and silly stories, deep and powerful stories, romance, lost love, saving the world, creepy moments, and plenty of butt kicking and humor. It’s a shame they have to end especially when I finally found a place to get all the RI covers, but the ponies will always be in the back pocket for Hasbro.

Alongside the ending announcement, there was an announcement of a five issue special called My Littly Pony Generations in which G4 and G1 will have an adventure together. The world is in danger from an evil G1 witch and so G4 must call upon the past to help. It looks fun and the covers are cute. It’ll be five monthly issues. After that, though, who knows what will happen, if anything. Maybe the comics will pivot to G5. This will certainly pad out time for Hasbro to see if its new Netflix movie and show will have the same appeal as previous generations.
