This morning Pokémon hosted a direct that honestly should have just been a released trailer as there was not enough information revealed to justify waking up this early. Night owl griping aside, Crown Tundra is promising to be a good holdover until whatever the plan is for the 25th anniversary next year is. Let’s take a look at the reveals.

First, every legendary pokemon currently available will be able to join your journey in the Crown Tundra. You can also catch some, if not all, in a series of spelunking dynamax and gigantimax battles with up to three other friends. Instead of random holes in the ground you can have a mini-adventure with your raid team. There are also six legendary Pokémon, pictures above, you can meet for the first time in this expansion. There’s Calyrex, the three legendary birds sporting their Galar best, and two new Regis: Regieleki and Regidrago. No new information was revealed about them during the direct, but on Pokémon’s website you can find bios on all of them including typing.

It’s our boy, Galarian Slowking. Having been teased since the passes were first revealed, it’s good to finally be able to get a look at our boy. That was until I saw him. His eyes freak me out, man. He’s a poison/psychic type and evolves from Galarian Slowpoke. According to the website, Slowking here mutters weird incantations as it attacks and the Shellder is the one using psychic moves. Horrifying. It’s signature attack, eerie spell, removes 3 PP from the attacks of the opponent pokemon which is really interesting. However Terrakion is back so everyone will be able to use him again and the use Galarian Slowking will see is sus.

The Crown Tundra itself is a mostly frozen expanse for you to explore. You’ll meet Peony who makes you the leader of his exploration team. Cutscenes where you watch the clash of the Galatians legendary birds with Peony were shown with prominence during the direct so it will be interesting to uncover the story. If the first expansion is anything to go by, the area you can explore will be massive.

For those of you who are fans of the characters of sword and shield, you can battle alongside any of the gym leaders, friends, and DLC characters from the games. There will be a series of tournaments called Star Tournaments where you double battle with a character of your choosing. Pokémon teases us that this is a great way to learn more about your favorites. I can either team up with Leon to unfairly destroy everyone or Nessa who is my favorite character. Hmm. Decisions.

After the little information given, we were treated to a cute music video. The Crown Tundra will be here on October 22nd. Starting on November 6th, people who have not yet experienced the world of Galar can pick up a physical copy of the games that come with their respective expansion pass. One final tease shows that you will be able to transfer Pokémon from Pokémon Go to Pokémon Home before the end of the year. When you do, you’ll be able to obtain Meltans. There will also be a mystery gift that will give you a special Melmetal that can Gigantimax.
At various dates through the month of October you’ll be able to obtain the cap Pikachu from last gen. They will each be wearing one of Ash’s hats from his many adventures of being 10 in the anime. The current code to get an original cap Pikachu is PIKACHUGET. Type it into mystery gift for a cute surprise.
Lastly, if you preordered the expansion, you’ll be able to pick up two cute (and too cute) outfits featuring Pikachu and Eevee. Happy Spelunking!
