Book Smart is a female lead coming of age story about two Academic overachievers Amy (Kaitlyn Dever) and Molly (Beanie Feldstein) who thought by keeping their noses to the grindstone gave them a leg up on their high school peers. But on the eve of graduation, the best friends suddenly realize that they may have missed out on the special moments of their teenage years. Determined to make up for lost time, the girls decide to cram four years of not-to-be missed fun into one night — a chaotic adventure that no amount of book smarts could prepare them for.
Helmed by first time director Olivia Wilde this entertaining female forward comedy hit on all the troupes of coming of age stories but with a new fresh attitude. Kaitlyn Dever and Beanie Feldstein breakout is this sure to be hit. Both actresses demonstrated chemistry and comedic timing of Michael Cera and Jonah Hill in Superbad. This film will speak to those who stayed up late and finished an assignment rather than party or watch that hot new movie. Rounded out by supporting cast of who’s who of comedy such Lisa Kudrow, Will Forte and of course Jason Sudeikis who co wrote the film. The movie did a good job fleshing out its stars and providing plenty representation for the lgbt community but ultimately fell victim to the by the numbers high school graduation movie. All in all it was a good film and will ultimately catapult its leads to stardom. Good first outing for first time director Olivia Wilde. Great soundtrack and amazing use of slow motion and audio to intensify the climax of the film
I give it 4/5 pocket protectors.
